Disrupt!/Design!/ in Beirut

2016 Beirut

Design is here to disrupt for a second year in a row! If you have a creative idea that incorporates sustainability in its core values, and would like some support in developing it into a business, then you should be part of Disrupt!/Design!/.

We are looking for disruptive ideas that challenge the status quo and introduce sustainable change in our society. Disrupt!/Design!/ is here to help you develop your idea through a 3-day ideathon during Beirut Design Week 2016 in collaboration with MENA Design Research Center and DutchCulture.

Sustainability means “development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Although primarily focused on ecology and the environment, it also involves social, cultural and economic aspects of life. If your idea is in line with this form of thinking, then you are eligible to be part of the ideathon. It could be a product, a service, a movement or an awareness campaign that encourages more responsible behaviour for citizens in Lebanon and the MENA region. This can include recycling and upcycling projects, but also services that maintain, support and educate.

Participation is open to all people currently residing in Lebanon of any age or background. Participants may be primarily designers, but also social workers, scientists, researchers, creatives, makers, techies, or creative people who are passionate about sustainability. There is only one condition: you must apply as a team of 2 to 5 persons.

The Disrupt!/Design! ideathon will take place over three days on May 26th, 27th and 28th and will be divided into a series of sessions designed to develop your idea. All throughout the event designers, marketers, business-savvy entrepreneurs, coders, filmmakers and communications specialists will guide the selected participants in a step-by-step process to perfect their project.

The ideathon will be an interactive and hands-on experience during which teams will iterate quickly on their initial idea and learn by doing. In an intense 72 hours experience the initial concepts will be matured to become promising start-ups. By the end of this workshop, finalists will compete for the first prize.

At the end of the 3-day ideathon, a panel of jury members will select 3 winning projects based on their pitch. Prizes of the winning teams will include a $3000 cash prize, as well as mentorship to develop their business plan until their project is implemented.

Once selected, you will be informed by email and a date will be set for a preparatory meeting to get you ready for the ideathon.
